What is Counselling?
At some point in our lives all of us can find ourselves in difficult situations where there seems to be no solution or way out. We may feel hopeless, afraid, unable to cope, things get on top of us and we may have unpleasant or unwanted feelings, act compulsively, do things we don’t understand; or just feel stuck and confused. This can be at home, work or in our social lives, where we can go through a period of struggles that affects our moods, attitudes, self-confidence and self -esteem. It’s not always easy making the decision to start therapy but when we are experiencing challenging and difficult times therapy may be just what you need to help you through them.
We will work together, working at a pace that feels right for you, in a non-judgemental space in which I hope you will feel comfortable and able to talk about anything which is important to you. Counselling is a way of moving forward, growing and becoming more able to meet challenges and opportunities in life.
Counselling is not about giving advice and there are no magical solutions, but I hope to make you feel safe and valued and help you to look at your life in new and creative ways and to make changes, always holding your best interests at heart.
Counselling gives you an opportunity to talk about problems you are facing and that stops you from living the life you want. It enables you to explore your thoughts, feelings, behaviours and emotions in order to gain a new perspective or insights that will help you to enhance your life. I will give you the time and space to explore what you can do to get through those difficult times by accessing your own inner resources. Through counselling you can clarify situations, understand yourself and others better, look at causes and effects of problems and work through obstacles in life.
The aim of counselling is to help you move forward and have a more fulfilling life through a therapeutic relationship where you feel comfortable to work with me. Therefore the first session gives us the opportunity to get to know each other a little better so that you can decide if you would like us to continue working together. There is no obligation to continue after the first session if you feel it is not right for you.
